The UK is an unquestioned global leader in technology development and application, and is already seen by Estonians as a natural location for technology business growth, with access to financing, and a big and educated market (and through the UK to global markets).
Among those in the know, Estonia is also a go-to location. It is the world-leader in digital government. It also has the highest number of start-ups per head in the world. Estonia is the birthplace of Skype, TransfereWise, Grabcad and other ICT innovators. Up to 15% of the economy is in the “technology” sector, including advanced manufacturing. Estonia is ranked 21st in the global Networked Readiness Index, the highest ranking in Central and Eastern Europe. 37% of Estonians (and 45% of Estonian women) have higher education, and Estonia has the joint top secondary schools (PISA) results in the world outside East Asia. The aim of TechLink is to help more in the UK technology sector to get into the know too as to what is on offer in and from Estonia, to the benefit of the technology sector and wider economies in both countries.
Using the knowledge of its team and partners, it has been set up to:
- Link together specific people, teams and projects in the two countries on specific technology issues
- Showcase early stage R&D projects and explore the opportunities for collaboration and continued funding, to the benefit of both Estonian technology developers and UK investors
- Use its user-friendly web presence to share information on activity in key sectors.
No sector is excluded, but the focus will be on areas of Estonian technological strength and expertise including Financial Technology, Cyber Security, BioTech, Digital Government, Smart City development, Robotics and Education.
